When it comes to technology, I’m a big fan of self-hosting apps and services within my own personal homelab. This includes streaming media I’ve acquired over time that I also like to share with close friends and family — functionality that I depend on a self-hosted application called ‘Plex’ to provide.

Plex was initially developed by a small group of independent developers who eventually incorporated into a small business (now known as Plex, Inc.) once the application began gaining traction within the self-hosting community. And like every other business on the planet, Plex, Inc. …

Preface

I haven’t been shy in previous posts about the spiritual journey I’ve been on over the past several years. Last year, this journey was accelerated after finding myself with more time to read, write, and digest materials in an attempt to better align my faith with the gospel message. At the same time, Brooke and I were also attempting to navigate the difficult landscape of COVID-19, politics, and starting a family when we eventually decided to leave our church.

The purpose of this post is to provide a brief overview of the behaviors that prompted us to withdraw from the…

When I was younger, I often skipped over genealogies in my Bible studies. Not only were long lists of names boring, but long lists of names Hebrew-in-origin were even more boring. I usually ended up skimming the lists to see if they mentioned my name (they never did) and then went on immediately to the next passage.

As I’ve grown more mature in my faith and perception of the Bible, I’ve come to appreciate genealogies and the vast amounts of information they contain. As it turns out, they can actually tell us a lot about who wrote them and what…

Brooke and I recently watched an animated Christmas movie released a few years ago titled ‘The Star’. The story features an anthropomorphic donkey who unknowingly finds himself in the midst of the events leading up to Jesus’ birth, all the while yearning for something ‘greater’. It’s a cute movie and probably one that we’ll encourage Wren to watch in the coming years as a kid-friendly way to learn about an important Bible story.

However, it’s important to note that the movie isn’t meant to serve as a literal depiction of the biblical events surrounding Jesus’ birth. Clocking in at 86…

MLMs, or multi-level marketing businesses, are a modern implementation of traditional pyramid schemes. Despite their constant public positioning against this accusation, they engage in unique operating practices that support the idea of people at the top of an organization taking advantage of those at the bottom. These practices include requiring sales associates to purchase their own inventory of products before they can begin selling to customers, as well as relying on the recruitment of other sales associates and their affiliated sales as a primary stream of revenue (often referred to as network marketing).

Chances are, most of us have met…

I’ve always considered myself a good citizen when it comes to politics — I’ve voted in every local, state, and federal election since I’ve been old enough to vote and have always attempted to stay informed on the most politically-relevant topics.

It wasn’t until the last year or two that I developed a more substantial interest in politics, and more specifically the political process and how it influences the decisions that impact our progress as a nation. …

Introduction

Sometime last year I developed an interest in Old Testament studies, specifically the historicity of the events concerning Israel’s origins. Having attended a combination of Pentecostal and Evangelical churches throughout my life, some of the topics I came across were fairly new to me and not something that I ever remember being covered in Sunday School (at least not in any real depth).

My curiosity was mostly piqued by some difficulties I had run into trying to reconcile modern, mainstream Christianity with the characteristics of the god I’d grown up knowing and experiencing. While the Evangelical perspective is that the…
